The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed a harmonised timetable for major external examinations in 2027, with the aim of releasing examination results by August 2027 to enable eligible candidates to begin admission processes into tertiary institutions from September.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which seeks to improve efficiency, coordination and educational outcomes across the country.

According to the ministry, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, convened a meeting with heads and representatives of examination bodies at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja to discuss the proposed timetable.

The meeting focused on aligning examination schedules, reducing clashes between examinations and ensuring that results are processed and released on time.

Proposed 2027 Examination Timetable

The Federal Ministry of Education has outlined the following proposed dates for the major external examinations in 2027.

Examination Proposed examination dates Expected result release
---------
JAMB UTME March 15–25, 2027 March 2027
NECO SSCE April 1–May 14, 2027 August 2027
WAEC WASSCE May 11–June 18, 2027 August 2027
NABTEB June 1–July 5, 2027 August 2027
NBAIS June 10–July 9, 2027 August 2027

Important: These dates are proposed schedules and should not be treated as final examination timetables. Candidates should monitor official announcements from the respective examination bodies for confirmation.

JAMB UTME May Hold Earlier in 2027

Under the proposed timetable, the 2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is scheduled to hold from March 15 to March 25, 2027.

If approved, the schedule means candidates may need to prepare for the examination earlier than they might expect.

Prospective candidates are therefore encouraged to begin preparing early by studying the JAMB syllabus, practising past questions and developing a consistent reading timetable.

Candidates should also monitor JAMB announcements for confirmed registration dates, examination procedures and other important information.

Why the Federal Government Is Harmonising Examination Dates

The Federal Ministry of Education explained that the proposed harmonisation is intended to improve coordination among examination bodies and minimise timetable clashes.

The government also wants to ensure that candidates receive their results early enough to participate in admission exercises for the 2027/2028 academic session.

By targeting August 2027 for the release of results from the major external examinations, the initiative seeks to give eligible candidates sufficient time to complete their admission requirements before tertiary institutions proceed with their admission processes.

The ministry stated that it would continue engaging examination bodies to encourage compliance with the proposed schedules, strengthen accountability and align examination dates and result releases with tertiary institution admissions.

FG Reaffirms Commitment to Education Reforms

The harmonisation initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader education reform agenda under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).

The programme, being pursued under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, aims to improve efficiency and expand timely access to tertiary education.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to working with examination bodies to achieve the proposed timelines and improve coordination across the education sector.

The announcement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.

Advice to 2027 JAMB, WAEC and NECO Candidates

Candidates preparing for the 2027 examinations are advised to take the following steps:

  1. Begin preparing early, particularly for the proposed March 2027 JAMB UTME.
    1. Study the official examination syllabuses and practise relevant past questions.
    2. Monitor official announcements from JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS.
    3. Avoid relying solely on unofficial examination dates shared on social media.
    4. Prepare the necessary documents and complete registration only through authorised channels when registration opens.

Conclusion

The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised 2027 external examination timetable, with JAMB UTME scheduled for March, NECO SSCE from April to May, WAEC WASSCE from May to June, and NABTEB and NBAIS examinations from June into July.

The government is targeting the release of results by August 2027 to support tertiary admission processes beginning in September.

However, candidates should remember that the dates remain subject to confirmation by the respective examination bodies. Regularly checking official announcements will help candidates stay informed and prepare effectively for the 2027 examination season.
