The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially announced the release of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External results. This significant announcement was made by the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim-Wushishi, during a detailed press briefing held at the council’s national headquarters in Minna on Wednesday. The release marks a critical milestone for private candidates across the federation who participated in the November/December examination cycle, often referred to as a "second chance" window for those seeking to complete their academic requirements for tertiary education entry.
Performance Statistics and Candidate Participation
The 2025 SSCE External results reflect a notable level of academic achievement among participants. Prof. Ibrahim-Wushishi disclosed that a total of 96,979 candidates registered for the examination, showcasing a gender distribution of 51,823 males and 45,156 females. Out of this registered pool, 95,160 candidates actually sat for the papers. The statistics further revealed that 93,425 candidates sat for English Language, with 73,167 of them, representing 78.32 percent, obtaining a credit grade or above. In Mathematics, the performance was even more pronounced as 85,256 candidates out of 93,330 participants achieved a credit grade or higher, resulting in a 91.35 percent success rate in the subject.
The most critical metric for many candidates is the ability to secure five credits including English Language and Mathematics. On this front, the Registrar stated that 68,166 candidates, representing 71.63 percent of the total, met this requirement. Furthermore, a broader look at the data shows that 82,082 candidates, or 86.26 percent, achieved five credits and above regardless of their performance in English and Mathematics. These figures underscore the importance of the External SSCE as a viable pathway for students aiming for admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education both within Nigeria and on the international stage.
Examination Timeline and Integrity Measures
NECO demonstrated improved administrative efficiency during this cycle. The examination was conducted from November 26 to December 13, 2025, followed by a marking exercise that spanned from January 5 to January 21, 2026. The results were processed and made available just 52 days after the final written paper was submitted. However, the Registrar did not shy away from addressing the challenges of examination integrity. He revealed that 9,016 candidates were booked for various offenses during the examination, which represents a 31.7 percent increase in malpractice cases compared to the 6,160 candidates booked in 2024.
To preserve the credibility of the assessment, NECO has taken firm disciplinary actions against staff and institutions found wanting. Five supervisors have been recommended for blacklisting due to their involvement in aiding and abetting malpractice; these individuals are located in the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, Adamawa, and Ondo states. Additionally, four examination centers located in Niger, Yobe, and Kano states have been recommended for derecognition following evidence of whole-center malpractice. These measures reflect the council’s ongoing commitment to conducting assessments that are reliable and globally respected.
