The Management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has officially announced a strategic adjustment to the university's daily working schedule in honor of the holy month of Ramadan. This directive, which was communicated through a special administrative bulletin, is designed to support the well-being of staff members as they observe the fasting period. By shortening the work day, the university aims to reduce physical strain and provide more time for spiritual reflection and family commitments, while ensuring that the core administrative and academic machinery of the institution continues to function effectively across both the Samaru and Kongo campuses.
The revised schedule stipulates that from Monday to Thursday, official duties will commence at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m. On Fridays, the work day will begin at the same hour but will end earlier at 1:00 p.m. to accommodate the Friday congregational prayers. These changes are temporary and specific to the Ramadan season, with the university management confirming that the standard civil service operating hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. will be reinstated immediately following the conclusion of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
While these hours apply to the general university workforce, certain essential service units—including the Security Division, the University Health Services (Sick Bay), and the water and electricity maintenance teams—are expected to maintain their regular shift patterns to ensure the safety and comfort of the university community. Heads of Departments and Directors have been tasked with overseeing the implementation of these hours to ensure that productivity remains high and that student services, such as transcript processing and departmental clearances, are not negatively impacted during the morning hours.
