The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has announced the suspension of the implementation of its recently revised student charges pending further consultations with the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and other relevant stakeholders.

In a statement, the University management explained that the decision was taken after considering additional concerns, observations and requests presented by student representatives regarding the revised charges.

WHY AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY REVISED THE STUDENT CHARGES

According to the management, the review of student charges followed extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, particularly the student body.

The review was considered necessary because of the growing gap between the University's available resources and the rising cost of providing essential services to students.

The financial challenges were further compounded by the loss of nearly ₦2.5 billion in annual revenue in May 2026, which placed additional pressure on the University's finances and affected its capacity to sustain and improve essential services.

The revised charges were intended to provide additional resources for services relating to students' academic experiences, welfare, security, transportation, utilities and general campus life.

WHY IMPLEMENTATION HAS BEEN SUSPENDED

The management disclosed that, shortly before implementation was due to commence, the Students’ Representative Council presented additional concerns and requests arising from further consideration of the revised charges.

In response, the University invited the SRC leadership to discuss the complaints and better understand their nature.

Following the meeting, management described the students' submissions as legitimate, responsible and deserving of further consideration.

Consequently, the University decided to suspend implementation of the revised charges to allow for broader consultations and additional input from students and other relevant stakeholders.

MANAGEMENT APPEALS FOR PATIENCE AND COOPERATION

The University management commended the students for the mature, constructive and responsible manner in which they had approached the matter.

It noted that meaningful dialogue and shared responsibility were important in resolving difficult institutional challenges.

Management also clarified that the suspension demonstrates its commitment to listening to students and ensuring that decisions with significant implications for them receive adequate consideration.

However, the University emphasised that it remains conscious of the financial challenges confronting the institution and the need to strengthen the resources available for quality education.

It therefore reiterated the importance of balancing students' legitimate concerns with the need to maintain a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and personal development.

STUDENTS ADVISED TO CONTINUE ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The management reaffirmed its commitment to student welfare and responsible, transparent management of the University's limited resources.

Students were urged to remain patient, understanding and cooperative while consultations continue. They were also encouraged to continue their academic activities and maintain confidence in the ability of the SRC and University management to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.

The University stated that further communication on the outcome of the consultations and the next steps would be issued in due course.

Students are advised to follow official Ahmadu Bello University communication channels for further updates on the revised student charges.
