FUHSO SECURES MDCN PRE-CLINICAL ACCREDITATION, TEACHING HOSPITAL GETS HOUSEMANSHIP APPROVAL

The Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo has recorded a major breakthrough as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria granted pre-clinical accreditation to the institution following a comprehensive accreditation exercise conducted on May 22, 2026.

The accreditation assessment was carried out by a 13-member MDCN team led by Dr. Nnameka Nwakama, who conducted an extensive evaluation of the university’s academic structure, manpower, laboratories, facilities, and compliance with professional medical education standards.

The development marks a historic milestone for FUHSO, especially as the accreditation was achieved within one year under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba. The achievement has been widely celebrated by stakeholders as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to transforming the university into a centre of excellence for medical education and healthcare training in Nigeria.

In another major achievement, the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo also secured approval for the commencement of its Housemanship Programme, a development expected to significantly strengthen clinical training, internship opportunities, and healthcare service delivery within the institution.

Speaking after the accreditation exercise, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba, alongside the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Dr. Eyaofu Agida, expressed appreciation to the MDCN team for the confidence reposed in both institutions.

They assured the Council that the university and teaching hospital would continue to improve on identified areas while maintaining high standards in medical education, clinical practice, and healthcare delivery.

Also reacting to the development, former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of FUHSO, Professor Abdullahi A. Abba, commended the rapid transformation recorded by the institution under the present administration.

According to him, the progress achieved within a short period demonstrates visionary leadership, dedication, and determination to position the university for national relevance and academic excellence.

He further urged the management of both FUHSO and FUHSTHO to sustain the momentum and continue meeting the standards required for quality medical training and professional healthcare practice in Nigeria.

The accreditation is being regarded as a landmark achievement not only for the university community but also for the entire Idoma nation, as it opens a new chapter in medical education, research, and healthcare development in the region.
