The University Management has issued an official notice regarding the nationwide indefinite strike action initiated by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
I. STATUS OF THE STRIKE
- Commencement: The indefinite strike action officially began on 1 May, 2026.
- Scope: This is a national directive affecting non-academic staff across Nigerian universities, including UNIBEN.
II. IMPACT ON CAMPUS UTILITIES AND SERVICES
Members of the University Community are advised that the strike will disrupt essential municipal services:
- Electricity and Water: The routine supply of these amenities is expected to be unstable or interrupted.
- Operational Constraints: Critical areas of university operations managed by non-academic staff will be restricted.
III. ADVISORY FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF
Despite the strike, the Second Semester of the 2025/2026 academic session has already commenced, and students are currently on campus. Management has issued the following directives:
- Resource Conservation: All residents and staff are strongly urged to be sparing and cautious in their consumption of water and electricity.
- Patience and Cooperation: The community is encouraged to manage available resources carefully while the strike persists.
IV. MANAGEMENT RESPONSE
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, and the University Management have stated the following:
- Resolution Efforts: There is an expressed hope that the issues leading to the industrial action will be resolved amicably and swiftly between the national unions and the relevant authorities.
- Goal: The administration's priority is to restore normalcy to campus activities as soon as possible to minimize academic disruption.
