The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reacted to a viral publication claiming that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) plans to collect a N200 levy from Nigerian students in connection with NYSC mobilisation.
The NYSC Management stated that the information is false and clarified that it has not discussed, agreed to, or entered into any Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NANS concerning the collection of any levy from students for the purpose of NYSC mobilisation.
The clarification was issued following the circulation of a publication titled “NANS Moves to Collect N200 Levy from Nigerian Students, Links Dues to NYSC Mobilisation.”
NYSC DENIES APPROVAL OF N200 MOBILISATION LEVY
According to the NYSC, the Scheme has no agreement with NANS regarding the collection of any levy from students or prospective corps members.
The Management explained that NYSC operates under the authority of the Federal Government of Nigeria and implements only policies, guidelines and procedures approved by the appropriate government authorities.
The Scheme therefore advised students and members of the public not to make any payment to NANS or any other student organisation on the basis that such payment is required for NYSC mobilisation.
NYSC EXPLAINS HOW MOBILISATION IS CONDUCTED
The NYSC Management further explained that the mobilisation process is conducted through established official channels.
According to the Scheme, the process involves collaboration between the NYSC Management and the Heads of Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs).
The Corps Producing Institutions are responsible for providing the required information on their eligible graduates to the NYSC for the purpose of mobilisation.
This information is subsequently used to process eligible graduates for participation in the National Youth Service Corps programme.
NYSC MOBILISATION NOT LINKED TO STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS
The NYSC made it clear that its mobilisation process is not linked to or dependent on the activities of any student association or organisation.
Therefore, students and prospective corps members do not need to pay any levy to NANS or another student body as a condition for being mobilised for national service.
The Scheme urged members of the public to disregard any message suggesting otherwise.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE CORPS MEMBERS
Prospective Corps Members are advised to rely only on information released through official NYSC channels regarding mobilisation, registration and other requirements for national service.
Students should also be careful when responding to messages requesting payment for NYSC mobilisation, particularly where such payments are linked to student associations or unofficial organisations.
Any information concerning changes to the mobilisation process will be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
NYSC REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO TRANSPARENCY
The Management of the National Youth Service Corps reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a transparent, credible and efficient mobilisation process.
The Scheme stated that its activities would continue to be carried out in accordance with existing government policies and approved guidelines.
Students and prospective corps members are therefore encouraged to remain properly informed and avoid spreading unverified information concerning NYSC mobilisation.
CONCLUSION
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that it has not approved, agreed to or entered into any agreement with NANS for the collection of a N200 levy from Nigerian students in connection with NYSC mobilisation.
The Scheme has advised students and prospective corps members to disregard any information suggesting that payment of a levy to NANS or any other association is required for NYSC mobilisation.
Prospective corps members are encouraged to rely on official NYSC channels for accurate information concerning mobilisation and other national service requirements.
