President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Professor Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who stepped down from the position less than a year after his appointment.
According to the Presidency, the appointment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria's higher education sector by promoting quality, access, integrity, and global competitiveness within the nation's university system.
As Chairman of the NUC Governing Board, Professor Ogundipe will oversee the activities of the regulatory body responsible for coordinating and maintaining standards across Nigerian universities. His responsibilities will include supporting policies that enhance university funding, academic stability, institutional development, and international competitiveness.
The Presidency expressed confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership and sustain the credibility of the Nigerian university system in line with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Professor Ogundipe is a distinguished academic and renowned botanist with decades of experience in university administration and research. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos from 2017 to 2022, where he played a significant role in advancing academic excellence, research, and institutional growth.
A Professor of Botany, his areas of specialization include molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation. He holds a Ph.D. in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from University of Lagos.
Currently, Professor Ogundipe serves as the Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer's University and is a Fellow of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology.
Throughout his distinguished career, he has also served as President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council.
The appointment has been widely welcomed within academic circles, with many stakeholders expressing optimism that Professor Ogundipe's wealth of experience in university administration and research will contribute significantly to the continued development of higher education in Nigeria.
