Share

The Management of Yakubu Gowon University (YGU)—formerly known as the University of Abuja—has released several critical updates for the 2025/2026 academic session. As the university completes its historic name transition in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, newly admitted and returning students are required to follow a specific administrative roadmap to finalize their registration and professional standing.

The following information summarizes the key directives concerning matriculation, the NELFUND loan scheme, and postgraduate admissions.

2025/2026 Matriculation Ceremony and Gown Collection
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, has formally scheduled the induction ceremony for the current session. This event is a mandatory rite of passage for all "freshers" and signifies their legal commitment to the institution’s academic and moral codes.

Date: Thursday, 12th February 2026

Time: 9:30 a.m. (All students must be seated by 9:00 a.m.)

Venue: Convocation Ground, Main Campus, Abuja

Important Note on Academic Gowns: The collection of matriculation gowns commenced on Monday, 9th February 2026. Students must present a stamped school fees receipt to their respective Faculty Officers to collect their regalia. All gowns must be returned immediately following the ceremony; a penalty of ₦5,000 per day will be charged for any late returns.

Policy on NELFUND Loans and Tuition Reimbursement
To ensure students remain fully registered while navigating the federal loan process, the University Management has issued a directive regarding the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

For Pending Beneficiaries: Students who have been approved by NELFUND but are still awaiting disbursement should endeavor to pay their fees to secure their registration status for the first semester.

For Reimbursment: Students who have already paid their 2025/2026 fees and are confirmed NELFUND beneficiaries are eligible for a refund.

Reimbursement Workflow:

Draft a formal application letter addressed to the Bursar.

Submit the letter through the Dean, Student Affairs for verification and recommendation.

Once approved, the Bursary will process the refund of the covered amount back to the student's account.

Postgraduate and Professional Admissions (Sultan Maccido Institute)
The Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development Studies has officially opened applications for its specialized programmes. This remains a premier opportunity for professionals in the Military, Law, Engineering, and Social Sciences to gain advanced credentials.
